What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy?

A creative, trauma-informed approach to psychedelic therapy

For some people, traditional therapy and medication help, but only so far. Something remains stuck. Often it's felt but not entirely shifted, understood but not released.

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy or "KAP" combines sublingual ketamine, a legal FDA-approved medication, with structured psychotherapy before, during, and after the experience. Administered under the tongue in a safe, controlled environment, ketamine induces a deeply introspective state in which insight and emotional processing can occur more freely. By enhancing neuroplasticity and increasing cognitive and emotional flexibility, it creates a window for therapeutic work to go somewhere it hasn't been able to reach before.

KAP may be especially helpful for adults navigating:

  • Treatment-resistant depression
  • Generalized anxiety and panic
  • PTSD and trauma-related symptoms
  • Disconnection from purpose, creativity, emotional expression

What KAP tends to make possible:

  • Accessing emotional material difficult to talk through alone
  • Processing trauma with greater openness and less resistance
  • Creating genuine movement after periods of feeling stuck
  • Integrating insights into everyday life so it lasts
Frequently asked questions

Ketamine assisted psychotherapy FAQs

Is ketamine legal and safe?
FAQ open icon

Yes. Ketamine is a legal, FDA-approved medication with a well-established safety profile, supported by a growing body of research for treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and anxiety. All medicine sessions at The Artful Life are conducted in a safe, controlled environment with a trained therapist present throughout.

Does The Artful Life prescribe ketamine?
FAQ open icon

No. We provide ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (the therapy portion), but prescriptions are referred out. We provide each client with a list of preferred prescribers they work with separately. There are separate charges for the prescription. If you have any questions please call our office at (978) 548-6288.

How is KAP at The Artful Life different from a ketamine infusion clinic?
FAQ open icon

At a ketamine infusion clinic, the medication is administered without structured therapeutic support around it. At The Artful Life, every KAP journey includes preparation therapy before and integration sessions after — grounded in our Expressive Arts approach. The therapeutic relationship and the creative integration work are what allow the experience to become lasting change, not just a temporary shift.

What does a ketamine medicine session actually feel like?
FAQ open icon

Sublingual ketamine induces a non-ordinary state of consciousness. A deeply introspective, often symbolic inner space. Many clients describe imagery, emotional releases, a sense of spaciousness, or unexpected insights. Your therapist is present with you throughout, so you are never alone in the experience.

What does a KAP treatment plan usually look like?
FAQ open icon

At The Artful Life, all KAP sessions take place in our warm, studio-based setting vs. a sterile medical office. The music, lighting, and environment are intentionally curated to help you feel grounded, held, and at ease. A trained therapist is present throughout your entire session, and the integration work that follows is where the real change takes root.

Preparation session
You and your therapist explore your goals, intentions, and readiness. You'll receive guidance on preparing your body and mind, and pick up your ketamine lozenges in advance of your medicine session.

Medicine session (3 hours)
You arrive at our studio and settle in. You self-administer your sublingual ketamine lozenge and rest with cozy blankets, music, and an eye mask while your therapist holds space and supports your inner journey throughout.

Integration sessions
Within one to three days after your medicine session, you meet with your therapist for integration. This is where the experience becomes something you can actually carry forward — through conversation, art-making, journaling, body-based awareness, or mindfulness, depending on what fits you best.

As a practice rooted in Expressive Arts Therapy, we bring a creative dimension to integration that most KAP programs don't offer. Clients often describe integration sessions as just as impactful as the medicine journey itself.
