Creative Arts Therapy

More than one way to heal

We offer Creative Arts Therapy for adults, teens, and children across the North Shore — using art, movement, music, drama, storytelling, and more to help people access what words alone sometimes can't reach.

What is Creative Arts Therapy?

Talking helps, but it isn’t always enough

Creative Arts Therapy uses creativity, imagination, movement, and expression as therapeutic tools — not because they're fun (though they can be), but because they give people a different way into their own experience. A way that bypasses the pressure to explain things perfectly and gets closer to what's actually there.

You don't need to be artistic, musical, or creative to benefit.

At The Artful Life, creative arts therapy can be woven into individual therapy, incorporated into group programs, or used as the primary framework. These approaches simply offer different doorways to understanding yourself more deeply and creating meaningful change.

What creative arts therapy tends to make possible:

  • Accessing what's hard to reach with conversation alone
  • Processing difficulty without having to find perfect words
  • Building self-awareness in a way that's natural, not forced
  • Creating real change through creative exploration

Types of creative arts therapy

Our team of clinicians draw from all sorts of techniques to meet each client where they are. No single approach is right for everyone. Your therapist will work with you to find the combination that fits — and that can shift as your work evolves.

The right creative doorway can change everything. We can help you find yours.

Here's a look at the modalities our practice offers:

Expressive Arts Therapy

A holistic approach that moves fluidly between visual art, movement, music, writing, drama, and play. Especially useful when emotions feel complex or difficult to put into words.

Art Therapy

Drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture used to surface thoughts and feelings that are hard to articulate. Creating an image can reveal what conversation sometimes can't.

Dance and Movement Therapy

Movement-based work that helps clients explore emotions, release tension, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves. No dance experience needed — this is about listening to your body, not performing.

Music Therapy

Listening, songwriting, lyric analysis, and improvisation used to uncover emotions, process experiences, and regulate stress. Whether music has always been central to your life or you're simply curious, it can become a powerful tool for healing.

Drama Therapy

Storytelling, role-play, puppetry, and other creative exploration that helps people understand themselves and their relationships from new angles. Can also incorporate tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) for clients who engage well through collaborative storytelling and imagination.

Narrative Therapy

A conversation-based approach grounded in the idea that we make sense of our lives through the stories we tell about ourselves. When those stories are shaped by pain or self-doubt, narrative therapy helps people find new perspectives and more empowering ways of understanding who they are.

Sandplay Therapy

A tray of sand and a collection of miniature figures used to create scenes that reflect a person's inner world. Especially helpful when feelings are hard to describe or fully understand.

Yoga Therapy

Mindful movement, breathwork, and body awareness to support emotional and physical wellbeing. Adapted to each person's needs and particularly useful for stress, anxiety, and trauma.

Play Therapy

Play is a child's most natural form of expression. Through games, art, and imaginative activities, children can work through challenges, express feelings, and build healthy coping skills in a safe and supported environment.

People behind the practice

Founded in 2016 by Natalie and Madelene, The Artful Life is the North Shore's only Expressive Arts Therapy group practice of its kind. What started as a single studio has expanded into three locations across Beverly and Salem, MA, with a full team of masters-level licensed therapists serving clients of all ages.

Creative Arts Therapy isn't something we offer on the side. It's the foundation of how we work. Every therapist on our team brings clinical training and genuine investment in finding the approach that fits each person who walks through our doors.

Our work is guided by four core beliefs:

  • Creativity is a universal human capacity — not a talent reserved for the few
  • The therapeutic relationship is at the heart of healing
  • Evidence-based practice and creative exploration are stronger together
  • Everyone deserves access to compassionate, high-quality mental health care
Frequently asked questions

Creative arts therapy FAQs

Do I need to be artistic to benefit from creative arts therapy?
FAQ open icon

No, not at all. In fact, most of our clients who partake in creative arts therapy don't identify as artsy people. It's more about the process, not the product. Your therapist guides the work and the focus is entirely on what the experience brings up for you, not on what you make or how it looks.

How do I know which creative approach is right for me?
FAQ open icon

We get it, that list above includes a lot of different techniques. Good news is you don't have to figure that out before reaching out. Many clients come to us knowing they want support but unsure which approach will fit. Our Client Care team matches you with a therapist whose style, experience, and creative approach align with your needs. From there, your therapist helps you find the right starting point.

Is creative arts therapy just for kids?
FAQ open icon

Nope! Everyone can benefit from these expressive modalities. We offer creative art therapy across all age groups: adult, young adult, teen, and kids. From Play Therapy and Sandplay for younger children, to Expressive Arts, Music, Drama, Dance, and Yoga Therapy for teens and adults. Each approach is adapted to the individual client's age, stage, and needs.

How does creative arts therapy fit into individual or group therapy?
FAQ open icon

Creative approaches can be woven into individual therapy sessions, incorporated into group therapy programs, or used as the primary framework depending on what serves you best. Your therapist will help determine how and when to bring these tools into your work together.

Are creative arts therapies covered by insurance?
FAQ open icon

Yes, these are evidence-based approaches recognized by most insurances. We accept insurance from a range of providers including Aetna, WellSense, Carelon, Point32 Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and United Healthcare/Optum. See our full, up-to-date coverage list here.
