One-on-one support, built around you.

We offer individual therapy for adults, teens, and children across the North Shore — at their own pace with a clinician who is genuinely invested in you.

What is individual therapy?

Private counseling, real change

Individual therapy gives you something self-help resources and even the people who love you most simply can't: an unbiased relationship built entirely around you.

At The Artful Life, individual therapy isn't just talking through your week. It's a structured process where you have access to a dedicated clinician, in a private space, with a treatment plan shaped by your history, your goals, and the way you actually experience the world.

We often draw on Creative Arts Therapy, EMDR, Somatic work, Internal Family Systems, CBT, DBT, and Mindfulness, woven together in whatever combination actually fits you.

Without this kind of consistent support, it's easy to keep circling the same patterns without ever getting to the root of them.

What individual therapy makes possible:

  • Understanding patterns instead of just surviving them
  • Processing what's hard without explaining it perfectly
  • Building a therapeutic relationship that creates real safety
  • Making progress at a pace that respects your capacity
Frequently asked questions

Individual therapy FAQs

How is individual therapy different from group therapy?
FAQ open icon

Individual therapy is private and built entirely around your specific needs. Group therapy, which we also offer, is a structured clinical program where you work alongside others navigating similar experiences. Both have real value, and many clients do both at different points in their care.

How often will I meet with my therapist?
FAQ open icon

We like to recommend that clients meet weekly when starting therapy in order to build therapeutic rapport with their therapist. Biweekly is often reserved after a client has made progress in treatment. Your therapist will help you find a cadence that supports your goals and fits your life. That may shift over time as your work progresses.

What if I've tried therapy before and it didn't help?
FAQ open icon

That's understandable. Most traditional therapy practices leave folks in a format or fit that wasn't right for them. Individual therapy at The Artful Life draws on creative and expressive modalities that work differently than traditional talk therapy, including Creative Arts Therapy, EMDR, Somatic Therapy, Play Therapy, Sandplay Therapy, Yoga Therapy, Dance Therapy, Drama Therapy, and Music Therapy, alongside IFS, CBT, DBT, and Mindfulness. Many clients who felt stuck elsewhere find something genuinely shifts here.

How long does individual therapy take?
FAQ open icon

There's no universal answer. Some clients work toward a specific goal over a few months. Others find value in longer-term work. Your therapist checks in with you regularly about your progress and what makes sense going forward.

Is individual therapy covered by insurance?

Yes. We accept insurance from a range of providers including Aetna, WellSense, Carelon, Point32 Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and United Healthcare/Optum. See our full, up-to-date coverage list here.
