  • I understand that starting therapy can be nerve-wracking. The prospect of sitting down in front of a stranger and sharing deep feelings and secrets is daunting. That's why, at the beginning of the therapy process, my focus is on getting to know clients and building trust. In our initial session, I invite clients to explore our variety of artistic mediums and pick a form of expression that feels right. We'll then use those materials together to structure a "get to know you" artmaking activity.

  • I love to utilize tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) such as Dungeons and Dragons or Powered by the Apocalypse as a therapeutic tool. These games allow for clients to create and embody a character that faces obstacles in an ongoing improvised story, inviting opportunity for many clinical issues and topics to be explored from an aesthetic distance. I also utilize other drama therapy approaches such as Role Theory and somatic play. I supplement my arts-based and exploratory approaches by bringing in elements of CBT/DBT, supporting clients in bringing skills that they develop through play or artmaking into their broader lives. I am currently training at DvT Boston to become certified in Developmental Transformations (DvT), a drama therapy method that utilizes free play in a dramatically heightened space to help people practice ways of coping with instability in their lives.

  • I am an aspiring birder/birdwatcher and my goal is to be able to recognize the birdcalls of local MA species!

Hi, I'm Danny Reinan! I'm a pre-licensed drama therapist. I'm originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota but came to Massachusetts to get my master's from Lesley University, and pursue the dream I'd held since I was a teenager of becoming a drama therapist. Now, as a post-graduate, I utilize my unique set of skills as a part of the vibrant Artful Life team. In my work, I use a variety of arts-based therapeutic interventions. This includes tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) such as Dungeons and Dragons, sand tray/play therapy approaches, role theory and embodiment, and narrative therapy.

I believe that the arts can heal across the lifespan, and enjoy working with a diverse range of children, young adults, and older adults. I have a particular passion for exploring topics of identity, self-esteem, and gender/sexuality, and enjoy working with LGBTQ+ and particularly transgender people. I approach my work with a trauma-informed lens, and support clients with complex trauma and/or minority stress in finding ways to cope with their stress and rewrite self- or societally-imposed narratives about them.
